Born in Hong Kong in 1960, Wai Yee CHAN worked as a screenwriter during the golden era of Hong Kong cinema in the 1980s.
Chan participated in the screenplay planning for Project A (1983) and Comrades: Almost a Love Story (1996). Her other screenwriting works include Purple Storm (1999), Bodyguards and Assassins (2009), and A Family Tour (2018).
Her debut novel The Memory Keepers in Ashes won the 5th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature in 1998.
Chan was one of the first ten public supporters of Hong Kong’s Occupy Central movement and actively participated in the 2014 Umbrella Movement calling for the direct election of the Chief Executive.
In 2018, she relocated to Taiwan and is currently an associate professor in the Department of Filmmaking at the Taipei National University of the Arts.
Her 2022 novel Little Brother won the 2023 Golden Book Award in Taiwan. She continues to create across literature, film, broadcasting, and theater.
